Have you ever felt the nudge to do more, be more, and impact more lives but didn't know where to start? If so, you're not alone. Many of us struggle with how to live out our faith in practical ways right where we are. This week, we explored what it means to be on mission locally, and I want to share some insights that can help you take concrete steps in following Jesus.
Empowered to Obey Locally
In Acts chapter 4, we see Peter and John standing up for their faith despite facing opposition. They were ordinary men, but their extraordinary obedience to Jesus made a significant impact. They recognized God's authority, spoke boldly about what they had seen and heard, and lived out their faith in their local context. This brings us to the main point of today's message: Obedience begins in our backyard.
Recognize God's Authority
Peter and John knew that Jesus was their ultimate authority. They didn't let human authorities deter them from their mission. As followers of Jesus, we find God's authority through His Word. The Bible is our guide, and it directs our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us that all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. When we recognize God's authority, we are empowered to obey Him first, even when it's challenging.
Speak What We Have Seen and Heard
Peter and John couldn't stop speaking about what they had seen and heard. Sharing your faith doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need a degree or a special course; you just need your testimony. Share your story naturally and conversationally. Psalm 66:5 says, "Come and see the wonders of God; His acts for humanity are awe-inspiring." Your story can inspire others and point them to Jesus.
Live Out Our Faith Locally
Living out our faith means making an impact right where we are—in our backyards, schools, and workplaces. Here are three actions you can take to obey Jesus locally:
- Start a Ministry: Has God given you a vision for your community's needs? Consider starting a ministry. 1 Peter 4:10 encourages us to use our gifts to serve others. Whether it's a small group, a community outreach, or a new initiative, your efforts can make a significant impact.
- Join a Ministry: If starting a ministry feels overwhelming, consider joining an existing one. 1 Corinthians 12:12 reminds us that we are all part of one body, and each part has a role to play. Find a ministry that aligns with your passions and get involved.
- Give to the Ministry: Your generosity can make a significant impact in spreading the gospel. 2 Corinthians 9:7 says, "Each person should do as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver." Consider supporting local ministries financially to help them reach more people for Jesus.
Conclusion
Obedience begins in our backyard. Whether it's starting a ministry, joining one, or giving to support one, you have a role to play in God's mission. What steps will you take this week to obey God locally? Will you share your story with a neighbor, volunteer at a local outreach, or support a ministry financially? Remember, Jesus wants your whole heart. What will you do this week to give it to Him?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the opportunity to make an impact right where we are. Help us to recognize Your authority, speak boldly about what we have seen and heard, and live out our faith locally. Give us the courage to step out in faith and obey You in our backyards, schools, and workplaces. Use us to make a difference in our communities for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
